Reopening as a Holiday Cottage in April 2017
The closest town to River Cottage is Bakewell (2 miles/3.2 km) which is renowned for its Bakewell Tart and Bakewell Pudding as well as for being one of the most attractive market towns in the Peak District National Park. Each year the town hosts events such as the Eroica Festival for classic bicycles, the Bakewell Food Festival, a Christmas Market and, of course, the annual Bakewell Show featuring country pursuits, animal displays and classic vehicles. A particular favourite of our guests is the Bakewell Farmers’ Market which is held at the Agricultural Business Centre on the last Saturday of each month.
For those with a passion for heritage, there are several attractions close by such as Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, the Matlock Museum of Mining, the Carriage Museum and the historic plague village of Eyam. In Buxton you’ll find the Georgian Royal Crescent, the Victorian Pavilion Gardens and the magnificent Art Deco Buxton Opera House which produces a variety of events ranging from comedy nights through ballet and opera to the excellent Buxton Festival. A little farther afield is Hardwick Hall, the final home of Bess of Hardwick; Lyme Park with its magnificent gardens and the beautiful Renishaw Hall.
Our guests who enjoy walking make full use of celebrated trails around Kinder Scout, Mam Tour, the Hope Valley and Dovedale. River Cottage is right by the famed Monsal Trail which now includes the very popular stone-lined railway tunnels and breathtaking views over Monsal Dale and the historic village of Ashford-in-the-Water. Please note that we have a wide range of walking maps that you’re welcome to use.
There are three cycle hire shops within five minutes drive of River Cottage. Many of our guests enjoy riding in safety on the former railway lines that now form part of routes such as the Tissington Trail and the Monsal Trail. For guests who bring their own bikes we’re happy to store them in our garage.
